Lectures mark the biotechnologist's day

To mark the day of the Biotechnologist, celebrated on Tuesday, June 30, the Biotechnology course at UNOESC, Videira Campus, held two lectures, in which viruses were the protagonists.

The first speech discussed virology with a focus on SARS-CoV-2 and counted on the experienced virologist Dr. Fabrício Souza Campos, Adjunct Professor of the Bioprocess and Biotechnology Engineering course at the Gurupi Campus, at the Federal University of Tocantins (UFT). Dr. Campos is also a permanent professor in the Postgraduate Program in Biotechnology (PPGBiotec / UFT), as well as 2o treasurer of the Brazilian Society of Virology (management 2019-2020).

Dr. Campos addressed important questions about the new coronavirus, including infections caused by SARS-CoV-2, which causes COVID-19. He also spoke about possible treatments and the stage of progress of vaccines, providing space for answer questions from students, teachers and other participants in the meeting.

On the same night, virologist Dr. Marcos Fernando Basso, graduated in Industrial Biotechnology from UNOESC, Videira Campus, with post-doctorate and scientific consultancy from 2015 to 2020 at Embrapa Agroenergia (Brasília, DF) and Embrapa CENARGEN (Brasília, DF), dealt with the pathogenic viruses of agricultural importance and its potential biotechnological use.

Dr. Basso, a graduate of the Biotechnology course at UNOESC, works as a researcher in plant biotechnology at the Mato Grosso Institute of Cotton (IMAMT, Rondonópolis Unit, MT). In his speech, Dr. Basso made an important point about plant viruses, as to the types, structures and diseases they cause.

For professor Dr. Cesar Baratto, coordinator of the Biotechnology course at UNOESC, Videira Campus, due to its relevance, the theme will continue on Wednesday night, July 1, emphasizing the plant-virus interaction and the great potential for using viruses as a biotechnological tool.

Today, following up, there will be a Live, at 7 pm, with technical English in Biotechnology, direct from Unoesc's Biotechnology laboratories with graduates and students of the course, with support from United Idiomas. Soon after, there will be a continuation of the lecture by Dr. Basso, from 20 hours.
